Damning Live Export Review Handed Down
The “Moss Review” has found major issues in the Department of Agriculture’s ability to properly regulate the live export industry.
The review has recommended:
An independent Inspector General of Live Animal Exports;
An animal welfare branch be reinstated within the Federal department;
More regular review of standards for livestock export, and prescription of standards in
regulation; and
Clarification of interactions between Federal and State laws.
Today Oliver Peterson spoke to Shadow Minister for Agriculture Joel Fitzgibbon about the review. He said Barnaby Joyce is to blame for the problems that led to poor regulation of the industry.
“He gave them an unconditional green light to do whatever they want.
“This created the wrong culture in the (Agriculture) department and the wrong culture in the industry.”
