The mother of 21-year-old Jack McCormack, who was killed last year while assisting his OLA driver change a tyre on the freeway, has pleaded with politicians and lawmakers to overhaul the justice system after the person responsible for her son’s death was sentenced in the Perth District Court on Tuesday.

Seng Lee Tan was jailed for four years, with parole available in August 2024. He had a blood alcohol level of 0.102 and two previous drink driving convictions.

Jack’s mum Natalie McCormack, who has also campaigned for regular road users to know first aid, told Liam Bartlett on 6PR Mornings she hoped WA’s politicians had loud-enough voices voice to bring about change to the system.

“I think it’s so needed, I really do,” she said.

“The whole justice system has just become so façade, and token, and there’s not real punitive consequences for those choices and those actions and it really does need to change.

“Anything I can do moving forward I will do, it’s something I’ll keep putting as much pressure on as I can.

“Unfortunately it’s probably going to take people like me – that have got the victim story, that have had that heart touched – that will actually be able to invoke some of that change, because we’ve lived the consequences of not having a good system.”
