“Free Speech Should be Protected in Universities”: Dr Jeremy Sammut

UWA recently had to cancel an event because they were worried a controversial speech would pose a safety risk. But should universities be penalised for not protecting free speech?

Dr Jeremy Sammut, Director of the Centre for Independent Studies Culture, Prosperity and Civil Society Program, spoke to Oliver Peterson about research that suggests the Government should cut funding for unis that don’t implement policies to protect freedom of speech.

Dr Sammut said, “I think universities should stand up for free speech because we fund them to have a free and open inquiry on all issues.

“I am concerned they don’t have the will to do that, which is why I am suggesting we need a bit of political leadership on this issue. And if they wont protect free speech they should be punished by having their funding cut.”
