Lifting the lid on the dark web

The alleged Medibank hacker has been dumping stolen data on the dark web. But what is it, how does it work, who can access it and is it illegal?

CyberCB cyber intelligence director Katherine Mansted told Simon Beaumont on 6PR Mornings that the dark web is not indexed through search engines, like Google, and you need specialised software to access it, with the traffic there encrypted, adding layers of anonymity to browsing and conversations.

“Criminals have for a long time liked to ply their trade on the dark web because of that encrypted nature… so it’s hard to see who’s behind that activity,” she said.
