WA’s top cop joined 6PR Breakfast host Gareth Parker to discuss the possibility of a unique solution to helping quell juvenile crime, as well persistent hooning issues in the suburbs.

Police Commissioner Col Blanch questioned whether the brains of those behind the wheel hooning “work in the same way” as normal people.

“They’re getting their licences … and then they’re hooning,” he told Parker.

“What’s even worse is, you might lose mum and dad’s car … I wouldn’t like to have come home to tell my dad that I had lost his car because of hooning.”

Blanch also discussed a diversionary idea from regional development minister Alannah MacTiernan to stop juvenile crime in the Kimberley, including offering offenders a chance to spend time on pastoral stations rather than in detention.

“I absolutely support it… I think we need to give it a crack Gareth,” he said.

“All of us need to really put a strong effort in to grab those young kids early and put them on a path that offers hope.”
