The Federal Government is cautiously optimistic progress can be made on solving the country’s workforce shortfall at its national jobs and skills summit that kicks off in Canberra today.

Nine’s federal political editor Michael Pachi told Gareth Parker on 6PR Breakfast the Albanese government hopes the summit will generate real outcomes.

“They’re probably going to agree to increase the migration rate, from the cap of 160,000, it could go up to 200,000,” he said.

Premier Mark McGowan was in Canberra and eager to see more skilled migrants enter WA ready to work.

“We have a lot of industries with demands for more people, and some changes to the visa rules … and support from the Commonwealth for training of local people [would be welcomed],” he said.
