WACOSS calls on WA Government to do more in reliving cost of living pressures
Inflation in WA has skyrocketed to 7.4 per cent over 12 months to the June 2022 quarter with furniture, petrol and new homes being the biggest drivers.
Louise Giolitto, Western Australian Council of Social Service CEO told Oliver Peterson on Perth Live that this increase of inflation is already hitting struggling Australian families.
“The biggest cost and driver for many households is the increase in rental costs. There has been 28% rent increase in the last two years as well as a rental shortage,” she told Oly.
“We know a lot of households are deciding to pay the rent as they can’t afford to lose the roof over the head. However, we know they can no longer afford the food needed for their family.”
Ms Giolitto is urging the State Government to pick up their game, believing there is more support that can be offered.
“We desperately need to see an increase in job keeper and desperately need to see a doubling of Commonwealth rent assistant so families aren’t at risk of losing their homes.”
