WA has recorded its first Omicron case in a hospital worker after an employee at Midland Hospital tested positive on Monday as Premier Mark McGowan announced 29 new cases for WA, including 17 local infections and 11 interstate cases.

The virus also reached the state’s mining industry with cases recorded at BHP’s Yandi iron ore site and Golden Grove mine in the Mid West this week, while a primary school in Beaconsfield was closed temporarily today after a teacher tested positive.

“What was different here to a normal day of school was that all of the teaching staff gathered in one space to do that professional development program,” Education Minister Sue Ellery said.

The rest of the school will return as normal on Thursday after a deep clean of the facility. Quarantined students will do online learning modules for two weeks.

Mr McGowan said the transition to a seven-day isolation period “won’t be far away”.

“As we get more spread of the virus, obviously we will need to move to the new rules,” Mr McGowan said.

Testing remains low with just 7,764 people presenting for tests.

From February 7, state vaccination clinics will be increasing capacity to be able to vaccinate 100,000 people a week.

More than 97.4 per cent of West Australians over 12 have received one dose of the vaccine. More than 91.9 per cent are double-dosed, and 37.6 per cent of the community over 16 has been boosted.
