WA records 1175 new COVID-19 cases as Mark McGowan grilled on inconsistencies

Western Australia recorded 1175 new local COVID-19 cases overnight, with just 16 people in hospital out of nearly 6000 active cases, as WA Premier Mark McGowan faced criticism from all corners over inconsistent Level 2 restrictions that kick in on Thursday across the state to help combat the rise in infections.

The move has drawn criticism from the hospitality industry, with some claiming the 150-person capacity limit imposed on venues would force them to temporarily close.

The Camfield owner Tim McLernon said he was shocked by the new capacity rules, which meant only one person per 23 square metres was allowed in his venue.

A 30-person limit on outdoor events, including children’s community sporting events, has also upset the community, with Mr McGowan saying the new rules were based on health advice.

6PR Mornings host Liam Bartlett and Steve Mills from Millsy at Midday both questioned the logic behind the decision, particularly given Optus Stadium was still allowed to operate with 30,000 at the venue.

“I feel for people trying to make a living, people who run businesses that rely on having people in their businesses to get revenue in order to pay their employees,” Mills told Bartlett on Monday.

“I just don’t think those who make those decisions don’t think that part of the equation through.

“It doesn’t make sense that 30,000 people can go into Optus Stadium and yet 30 people can’t go and watch their kids play netball. I don’t understand the inconsistencies.

“In the last 12-18 hours people have started looking at it saying ‘hold it, I’m vaccinated three times, have done everything the government has asked me to do. I just don’t understand some of these rules, they’re inconsistent and they don’t make sense’.”
