One of WA’s biggest pub owners has hit out at the government’s new definition of a close contact after multiple COVID-19 cases were linked to events at The Avenue in Claremont, Cottesloe Beach Hotel and Gage Roads in Fremantle at the weekend.

Health directives issued on Wednesday night require anyone who was at the venues for more than two hours during the same time as a positive case to isolate under the state’s close contact definitions.

Tim McLernon, who co-owns The Camfield, The Reveley, The Elford and The Stables Bar, told Gareth Parker on 6PR Breakfast that every venue in WA is already down at least 50-75 per cent in turnover since late last year due to the state’s strict COVID-19 mandates around mask wearing and social distancing.

“It’s just not as much fun going out at the moment,” he told Parker.

“I’m not hearing any inclination from our leaders that we will try and get back to normal as quickly as possible once it feels safe to do so.

“We now have a basis of seeing what’s happening in other parts of the world, especially in other parts of Australia.

“I guess we want to have a bit of positivity that there is the desire to get back to normal life as quickly as possible.”

Premier Mark McGowan visited Gage Roads on Friday night, however, a spokeswoman said he was not at the recently-opened brewery long enough to require quarantine, and had since returned a negative rapid antigen test as a precaution.
