As of Thursday the 10th of March, Western Australia will transition into the ‘very high case load’ setting for COVID restrictions.

The settings will see a relaxation of isolation rules for critical workers and school students.

Minister for Education Sue Ellery says schools have been under enormous pressure this year.

“Something like 1,500 school staff and more than 17,000 have been either in isolation because they’re a close contact or because they’re positive themselves,” she told Perth LIVE. “We’re heading into the peak of the Omicron virus period and so it’s going to get tougher, there’s no question about it.”

The new changes will mean asymptomatic critical workers, teachers and students will be able to continue to work and face to face learning.

Critical workers who are asymptomatic close contacts can attend work as a last resort, if the following details have been agreed between employer and employee:

  • record a daily negative Rapid Antigen Test (RAT) prior to attending or on arrival at the workplace;
  • wear a surgical mask to work and outside your home, and travel alone, if possible;
  • when not at work, you must self-isolate;
  • if symptoms ever develop, you must follow symptomatic close contact protocols; and
  • if a RAT is positive, you must follow confirmed positive case protocols.
