WA government hands off: Whale carcass removal busting small council’s budgets

Local councils are currently footing the bill for any washed up whale carcasses on WA shores. The Shire of Waroona is calling for the state government to intervene and pay for any future removals.

Because whales are classes as fauna there are certain requirements for their disposal, creating an expensive problem for the councils.

Shire of Waroona President Mike Walmsley told Millsy & Karl on 6PR Breakfast this isn’t an anomaly and the shire has probably spent anywhere from $40 thousand dollars in the last decade.

“As you can imagine the smells like nothing you’ve ever smelt before, so in the public interest we’re obliged to as the people that manage the beach, so getting rid of it is probably something you’re sort of compelled to do,” Mr Walmsley said.

“My argument is is why should we pay for that, as a small council its considerably expensive.”
