WA case numbers soar past 2000, one person dies after contracting virus

The number of COVID-19 cases in Western Australia has soared past 2000 on the day the state reopened its border after 697 days.
A total of 2423 new cases were recorded overnight, with just three related to travel, while Premier Mark McGowan announced one person from the Great Southern region had died overnight after contracting the virus.
Six more people were admitted to hospital due from the virus, bringing the total to 22.
