Two cut from UK Tories’ race to find new PM in first round of voting

Six contenders are through to the next round of the Tory Party race to find Britain’s next prime minister.
Eight hopefuls received the necessary initial support of 20 conservative MPs.
But Jeremy Hunt and Nadhim Zahawi were eliminated in the first round after failing to reach the next threshold of 30 MPs’ votes.
Former chancellor Rishi Sunak is in the lead for the job, currently backed by 88 of his party colleagues.
There’s hope still for Penny Mordaunt, who currently holds 67 votes, with the chance to pick up further support as her rivals are eliminated from the race.
She’s now overtaken Mr Sunak as bookmakers’ favourite to win.
The winner will be announced on September 5.
