The long-awaited inaugural journey on Perth’s new airport train link this weekend will include Anthony Albanese among its many VIP passengers but the state opposition says the opening is no cause for celebration.

Opposition Metronet spokesperson Tjorn Sibma used the fanfare to pressure the WA government on future costings of the rest of the Metronet program, which has blown out to $10 billion.

“The version that is being released on Sunday was derided and criticised, humiliated by Mark McGowan and Rita Saffioti when they were in opposition,” he told 6PR Mornings host Liam Bartlett.

The $1.86 billion Airport Line jointly funded by the State and Federal governments has faced delays amid safety concerns, flooding and injuries to workers since the first sod was turned by Colin Barnett six years ago.

Earlier on 6PR Breakfast, Transport Minister Rita Saffioti (pictured above with Perth Airport boss Kevin Brown) detailed when the public can ride the new train line for free.

“You can go through the tunnel, under the Swan River, under the runway, it’s a pretty sensational ride,” she told stand-in Breakfast co-hosts Julie-anne Sprague and Mark Gibson, before admitting the government’s initial forecast of the train line hosting 20,000 trips a day was a 2015 estimate and unlikely achievable any more.

The new line joins the existing rail network at Bayswater station, meaning inner-city rail users on the Midland and Fremantle lines will have increased daily services.

From October 10, trains will leave Claremont and Bayswater stations every six minutes during peak times and every 7.5 minutes off-peak. The airport line will also link to Qantas terminals three and four via shuttle bus.
