Top cop’s push to ban full-strength beer in Kimberley as mass fight erupts in town
Derby police have apologised to “law-abiding” locals in the community after implementing stricter liquor restrictions in the community after a massive fight in town involving more than 100 people.
“I’ve been advised there was a fight up there last Monday, people armed with bats and golf clubs,” Police Commissioner Chris Dawson told Gareth Parker on 6PR Breakfast.
The increased violence in the community came as Mr Dawson revealed an application was before the Liquor Commission for all full-strength beer to be banned for takeaway sale in the Kimberley.
Due to alcohol related antisocial behaviour late yesterday/overnight where weapons were used and people injured Liquor Restrictions are in place until further notice. 1 x Mid strength beer or 1 bottle of wine (no combos) per person per day. Apologies to law abiding citizens. #fb

“I’m doing this on the basis of evidence, we’re trying to stop harm in the community. It is wrong for people to suggest you can’t buy liquor,” he said.
The application was about minimising domestic violence in the community.
“That’s the bit that I’m concerned about. I’m not at all interested in the commercial outcomes.”
