A Queensland academic’s call for all smartphones to be waterproof prompted 6PR Breakfast listeners to phone in with some strange stories of how their mobiles were damaged in water, as well as some equally weird tips on what worked to fix them.

Dr Ritesh Chugh, an associate professor of information and communications technology at Central Queensland University, told Mark Gibson, in for Gareth Parker, it was 2022 and high time our mobile phones were protected from such chance encounters with water.

“Should people necessarily be going swimming with their phones? I advise against it. But if you’re at the pub and you spill a glass of beer over it, I doubt something would happen to your phone,” he said.

Breakfast listeners phoned the program in droves relaying their own disasters, including what some did to fix their mobiles from water and the response from mobile phone companies to their complaints.
