A food retail expert has lifted the lid on the obscure ruses supermarket chains use to try lure customers to spend more.

Queensland University of Technology food retail expert Gary Mortimer told 6PR Breakfast host Gareth Parker grocery stores manipulate customers into spending more money using psychological tricks.

“The first one your listeners would see is the fresh department, it’s always at the front, and that’s designed to create that atmosphere of a market feel, fresh food, it’s healthy, it’s good for you,” Mortimer said.

“Originally when Aldi arrived in Australia it had the fruit department at the back of the store, and very quickly when they redesigned their stores they moved it to the front.”
