The science behind Kathleen Folbigg’s exoneration

Simon Beaumont

The Australian Academy of Science has called for the national criminal justice system to be completely overhauled following the pardoning of Kathleen Folbigg over her 2003 conviction.

Folbigg was pardoned due to scientific sequencing identifying a genetic mutation in her and her children, resulting in them dying during their infancy.

“In 2003 when Kathleen was being sentenced the human genome had only just been sequenced for the first time,” AAS CEO Anna-Maria Arabia told Gary Adshead on 6PR Mornings.
