The ‘critical question’ Larry Graham says needs to be answered over local government oversight

6PR Mornings presenter Larry Graham, who’s filling in for Liam Bartlett over summer, says there’s no reason why local government should be excluded from a new forensic auditing arrangement.
“The local government sector is a very, very big sector,” he said on 6PR Mornings.
“It employs over 16,000 people, and has assets worth over $40 billion … and it spends every year on average about $350 million on purchasing.
“It’s a big business.
“We know, from reports … that there is a lot wrong in local government, we know from the Auditor-General’s own report that the department of local government is not properly doing it’s job of overseeing local governments.
“So with that amount of money, and those warning signs saying we’ve got seriously problems in the sector, why did the government not fund it to be forensically audited?”
