Starlight Children’s Foundation aim to raise more funds before Christmas
The Starlight Children’s Foundation is aiming to raise $1.7 million for sick children in time for Christmas.
The foundation seeks to give children with a serious illness an experience of happiness through play, social connection and creativity.
Naomi Holly’s six-year-old daughter Nora Holly was one of those children that the foundation supported.
Nora was diagnose with neuroblastoma at eight months.
The disease left her paralysed from her neck down because a fist-sized tumour was crushing her spinal cord.
Nora went through six rounds of chemotherapy and had surgery to remove as much of the tumour as was possible.
Nora’s made a remarkable recovery, and thanks to the starlight foundation, will go camping with her family this Christmas in the camper trailer she wished for.
“We make lots of family memories in (the camper trailer), and she’s so very proud of it,” Naomi said on 6PR Mornings.
“The Starlight captains have broken up many long days we spent in the hospital in the ward.
“It’s great, it’s made going to the hospital a really positive experience … she’s not worrying about the scans or the needles or the doctors or those sort of things”.
Starlight Children’s Foundation National Programs Manager Jono Kirkham said there were many more sick kids who need support.
“In Perth alone, there’s up to 100 sick kids that are expected to spend Christmas in hospital,” he said.
“So as much money as we can raise over the Christmas period would be the best, so we can continue to provide the experiences and happy moments … for these families who are doing it tough over Christmas.”
