South West shires consider paid parking to protect natural habitat

Paid parking could be installed at national parks and popular beaches in our South West to help protect the region’s vegetation and natural habitat.

Busselton mayor Grant Henley first raised the issue recently on 6PR Weekends, telling host Simon Beaumont his council and other South West shires were considering the move as more people head to the region in light of COVID-19 and related travel restrictions.

Henley said more tourists were heading to the South West without accommodation, parking on the side of roads and at beach carparks.

“People may have to pay a small price to go in and enjoy that natural environment in order to protect it” Henley told Beaumont on the weekend.

“Would you be prepared to pay for parking at Meelup Beach and other popular tourist spots in the South West?” 6PR Mornings host Simon Beaumont, filling in for Liam Bartlett, asked listeners on Tuesday.
