Schools urge kids to walk as active travel rates reach dramatic low

Schools and government agencies are urging parents to avoid driving their children to school when unnecessary, with the amount of kids walking, riding or scooting to school currently at a low point of about 20 per cent.
The Department of Transport’s Acting Executive Director of Urban Mobility Michelle Prior told Ian Blackley on 6PR Afternoons the majority of children are being dropped off in cars, which is leading to congestion around many schools.
“Whether its a different work force than we had 30 years ago, or whether it’s a higher concern about safety, there are multiple factors we’ve seen that have caused this dramatic decline,” she said.
