Serbian officials have reacted angrily to the Australian government’s decision to deport tennis superstar Novak Djokovic.

Djokovic left Australia last night, after his appeal to remain in the country failed in the Federal Court.

Channel Nine European Correspondent in Belgrade, Carrie-Anne Greenbank, said the Serbian President, Aleksandar Vučić, was scathing of the way Djokovic had been treated.

“He say it has been ‘tormenting’ and ‘torturing’ for Novak Djokovic,” she said on 6PR Breakfast.

“He’s calling it a witch-hunt, and says it’s not Novak that’s been humiliated but Australian authorities.

“After he went public with that, Serbia’s Prime Minister (Ana Brnabić) made a statement as well, and she said that the deportation of Novak Djokovic is scandalous.

“So quite strong words by the politicians here, keeping in mind they have an election coming up, so they’re talking as much to their own people as well as Australia.

“But they are really echoing the sentiments that are being felt here.”
