A retired newsreader has stepped up to the plate to sing the national anthem at a local Grand Final in Tasmania after technical difficulties prevented the prerecorded version from being played.

Peter Gee was the ground announcer at North Hobart Oval for the Grand Final between Hutchins and DOSA when he leapt into action to save the day.

He’s since become a viral sentation!

And remarkably, he told Gareth Parker it’s the second time he’s had to step in.

“I have to admit I did a dress rehearsal 30 years ago,” he said on 6PR Breakfast.

“I was working for ABC TV doing a basketball match … and a similar thing happened, it was probably a cassette back then, it jammed, and everyone’s standing around.

“And as you say, the players are getting agitated, they just want to get on with the game, we just want to get on with the sport, so I thought ‘right’, I threw my cans off, and just started bellowing out the acapella national anthem.”
