A coalition of tenant advocate groups are pushing for an overhaul of WA’s rental laws, claiming tenants are not afforded enough protection.

Shelter WA, Circle Green Community Legal and independent housing and tenancy law experts want the no-grounds eviction clause removed.

The no-grounds eviction clause allows landlords to remove tenants from their property in 60 days for no reason.

The Real Estate Institute of Western Australia are strongly opposed to the move.

CEO of Shelter WA, Michelle Mackenzie, told Liam Bartlett it’s been nearly 30 years since the legislation was updated.

“We know that renting is very different now,” she said on 6PR Mornings.

“People did want to purchase a home, they still do, we know that’s becoming more and more difficult so we have more renters for life.

“We need to accept that and have contemporary laws that support people that live in the rental home for a very, very long period.”
