Police union blasts government’s ‘failed’ recruitment campaign, calls for wage increase
Police are struggling to lure new recruits and are even losing officers due to the demands of the job, with the police union calling for better pay and conditions to rectify the issue.
It comes after the government promised to deliver an additional 950 police officers by June 2024.
However, there’s only been a net increase of 81 police officers since the campaign was launched in 2020.
President of West Australian Police Union, Mick Kelly, told Liam Bartlett the campaign has failed.
“We simply need better wage increases,” he said on 6PR Mornings.
“McGowan’s government need to urgently review that 2.75 (per cent wage increase) policy, it’s not cutting the mustard.
“And for the amount the government and the community expect from our people, the pay just doesn’t equate to the demands and the pressures.”
