Police launch Operation Redwater to tackle drugs on mine sites

West Australian police have raided another mine site in the Pilbara after targeting Fortescue Metals Group Christmas Creek mine on Tuesday.

Police confirmed on Wednesday morning that FMG’s Cloubreak mine site was being raided but didn’t release any other details.

WA Today and 6PR reported on Tuesday that several police and their sniffer dog Bucky searched 370 FMG employers and contractors arriving on eights flights from Perth, Port Headland, Karratha, Fitzroy Crossing and Darwin.

One contractor was issued with a summons after being nabbed with a drug without a prescription.

Police have denied Operation Redwater was in response to the arrest of a 31-year-old contractor in October after he was found with $25,000, scales and methamphetamine in his accommodation at FMG’s Hamilton Village in South Hedland.

Commander Murray Smalpage said police had not ruled out targeting workers’ dongas in the future.

"That may occur depending what we uncover on the ground," he said.
