Red right-turn lights here to stay

A trial investigating whether red right-turn arrows along busy Perth roads should be turned off at night has been abandoned early following an increase in crashes. Prompting Oly to ask they question, why do we need a red turning arrow to prevent us from turning right at night? Why can’t we turn when it is safe to do so?
