Police to get more powers in the fight against terrorism

The State Government is confident proposed changes to anti-terrorism laws which allow suspects to be detained only on suspicion, won’t be taken advantage of.

Under current laws a person can be detained if a terrorist act is deemed to be imminent. The changes which are being introduced to Parliament today would let police detain a person for fourteen days if it’s believed they are capable of carrying out a terrorism act soon.

Police Minister Michelle Roberts joined Oliver Peterson today where she said the changes are the same as laws already in place in the rest of the country.
