City of Swan could declare a climate emergency

Councillor Claire Scanlan is bringing a motion for the City of Swan to declare a climate emergency.

She told Oliver Peterson she wants to see the City of Swan join a nation wide cohort of councils who have joined a world-wide initiative by Council Action in the Climate Emergency.

“It’s not just a local issue, it’s a state and federal issue. We need all the level of Government’s to act.

“The purpose of my motion is to lobby the state and federal Government to help us.”

If the motion is passed at next week’s council meeting, the City of Swan will join Vincent, Fremantle and Vic Park as WA local governments who have declared a climate emergency. The council will then make a commitment to increase their approach to reducing their impact on the environment.
