Calls to reform retiring pollie perks

At least 20 politicians have been given “farewell” payouts of up to $103,000 after failing to be elected in May 2019.

The Australian Taxpayers’ Alliance are calling for reform with Director of Policy Satya Marar saying these entitlements should be reconsidered in the face of mounting levels of public debt.

“It’s absolutely insane the level at which its set at. It’s way too generous.

“$100,000 is more than most people in this country make in a year. It’s $50,000 for someone who was in the job for just three months. This isn’t a reasonable amount of money to tide you over between jobs. Especially when you’re a politician who probably has tonnes of career alternative career options lined up right afterwards.”
