PM calls Royal Commission into abuse at NT detention centre

The Australian Human Rights Commission believes a Royal Commission into the abuse of juvenile detention inmates in the Northern Territory, is in response to the Australian public seeing the evidence with their own eyes.

Vision from 2014, aired by the ABC’s Four Corners program last night, shows teenage boys left in solitary confinement for weeks, stripped naked, sprayed with teargas and abused by guards.

AHRC President Professor Gillian Triggs has told Gary Adshead she was told the problems at the Northern Territory detention centre had been fixed during a visit to the Northern Territory Attorney General.

Outgoing Northern Territory MP, Matt Conlan, told Gary Adshead he was unaware a report had been prepared into the abuse in 2014, adding ‘there would have been the proverbial hell to pay’ if Cabinet had known.
