Petrol retailers to be monitored once fuel excise cut removed

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission has been ordered to monitor petrol retailers when the fuel excise cut is removed at the end of this month.
September 29 will bring a rise in the fuel excise by 22 cents, with Jim Chalmers refusing calls to extend the cut beyond the end date.
Will Golsby, RAC General Manager External Relations told Oliver Peterson on Perth Live that it will be critical to monitor the expected higher fuel prices in order to ensure motorists are getting charged the appropriate prices.
“In October last year for example when the fuel cycle moved to a fortnightly cycle and there simply weren’t any answers to the question being asked of why it moved and what happened to the prices, we also saw margins increase during this time,” he told Oly.
“Our key concern is for people that need to fuel up every week simply can’t chase the cheaper prices and that’s having a real cost.”
“We have been saying for a while now that these prices need to be looked at for the community.”
