Perth Airport CEO says it will take airport traffic years to recover

Perth Airport CEO Kevin Brown says he expects the number of flights in-and-out of Perth to take years to recover.

It comes after Premier Mark McGowan confirmed that the borders would reopen on February 5 to double vaccinated travellers.

“I don’t see it getting back to where we were pre-COVID very quickly,” Mr Brown said on 6PR Breakfast.

“I think domestically we might still see a couple of years for those travellers to return to the same numbers pre-COVID and internationally, perhaps a bit longer – maybe two to three years.

“I hope not, but I think the main challenge we’ve got Gareth is a number of airlines are in financial distress as airports have been.

“We’ve got fewer planes available, the ones we’ve got left are smaller, and the whole world’s scrambling to get the connectivity back in the air again.

“So it’s going to be a tough uphill battle for a number of years to get back the traffic we had, let alone the growth and traffic that’s been lost over the intervening period as well.”
