Footy fans at Optus Stadium will be restricted to eating and drinking in their seats only under new changes to COVID-19 restrictions.

Venue CEO Mike McKenna said staff would also undertake vaccination checks at stadium gates ahead of its first AFL fixture next Sunday afternoon between West Coast and Gold Coast.

“We’ll be asking people to follow the rules, but whether it is enforced will be up to the people who manage it,” he told Gareth Parker on 6PR Breakfast.

“We will ask people to comply with the rules, and that’s been done very well over the last two years.”

Patrons at Optus Stadium can watch the football without masks but must wear them when they move around the $1.8b stadium, which is capped at 30,00o or 50% while the WA government’s level 2 restrictions apply.

Mr McKenna said extra staff had been hired to monitor vaccination checks and the new changes, and urged fans to have their proof of vaccinations ready to minimise queues.
