Oliver Peterson calls for supermarkets to reintroduce the pensioner hour

West Australians are well aware by now of the challenges facing Woolworths and Coles to fill shelves due to the freight challenges caused by train track flooding in South Australia.

Perth Live host Oliver Peterson told listeners of his recent experience after visiting three different supermarkets to track down essential items for his family. Whilst in Coles, Oly saw an elderly couple with an empty trolley in a very sparse meat and poultry section and told him that they might as well go hungry because they can’t get anything.
Peterson has called for Woolies and Coles to bring back the dedicated shopping hour for elderly West Australians and people with disabilities.
“Open the majors an hour early and allow our older cohort the chance to shop without the crowds, with the maximum available stock after the shelves have been replenished overnight at least for the next little while as the logistical challenges continue to be resolved.” said Peterson.
Woolworths put in the temporary measures two years ago they said “We continue to encourage all Australians to be mindful of those in our communities who might need extra help at this time”
“Now, more than ever, we need to be kind to each other, especially to those most vulnerable. It’s over to you Coles and Woolies, please help our elderly and vulnerable West Australians. It doesn’t need to be every day, it could be every other day, let’s just give them a bit of help.”
