An Australian expert on Russia has paid tribute to Mikhail Gorbachev after the former Soviet leader died overnight aged 91.

Gorbachev’s efforts to democratise his country’s political system and decentralise its economy led to the break up of the Soviet Union in 1991.

Kyle Wilson, a former diplomat at the Australian Embassy in Moscow and visiting fellow in the Centre for European Studies at ANU, told Gareth Parker on 6PR Breakfast that the ex-Soviet leader’s action to tear down the iron curtain transformed the country.

“Gorbachev was the bloke who realised realised the Soviet Union was in a dead end.. he was a man of incredible vision,” he said.
