West Australian Minjee Lee has won her first US Open with a record-breaking four-shot win at Pine Needles in North Carolina.

Lee shot a 13 under, the lowest 72 hole score in a spectacular win in her second major tournament.

The Fremantle golf star’s coach, Ritchie Smith, told 6PR Breakfast host Gareth Parker that he was always confident about a victory at the US Open.

“From about halfway through the third round, I was really confident that she would get the job done,” he said.

“I think we’re now starting to see her develop into one of the top three players in the world,

“We call her ‘The Smiling Cyborg’ she’s ruthless but not rude, like she wants to be a role model, but she definitely plays to win.”

During Sport, Paddy Sweeney told 6PR Breakfast that it means the Fremantle star will walk away with the richest prize in women’s golf at almost $2.5 million.

“The thing I loved about this victory, Gareth, is that it just showcased how tough mentally she is,” Sweeney said.

“She led after the second round, and then she was able to sustain that through.”
