How can you heal a broken heart?

A new medical trial has launched in hopes to discover the possibility of treating Takotsubo or in simpler terms, ‘broken-heart syndrome’.

Dr Matthew Best, from the Perth Cardiovascular Institute told 6PR Mornings host Gary Adshead that in the late 90’s and early naughties the condition became more appreciated.

“The patient would be under significant stress, fighting another disease or emotional stress – and their heart would mimic a heart attack so they’d go to hospital with this chest pain but we’d look at their arteries and there wasn’t any blockage,” he told Gary.

“So we’d all be scratching our heads like why is their heart behaving like this? So it absolutely exists.”

Dr Matthew Best highlighted that the broken-heart syndrome is much less common than a heart attack, and urged listeners to still visit a hospital if you feel symptoms.
