Iconic MCG bar set to be updated

Article image for Iconic MCG bar set to be updated

The MCG hasn’t been renovated since 2006 – when the Olympic Stand was completed – but a symbolic alteration is set to occur in the next few days at one of the stadium’s famous bars.

The Percy Beames Bar, which is situated on level 2 of the MCC Members, houses various pieces of memorabilia, which includes a central display highlighting numerous record scores recorded by visiting teams over the years.

Alastair Cook notched up his 32nd career century and is 244 not out after Wednesday’s play and the MCC confirmed the prestigious club will update the display before the fourth Ashes Test concludes on Saturday.

Viv Richards’ 208 – scored during the 1984/85 West Indian tour of Australia – was previously the highest score by a touring batter at the MCG until it was beaten late on Day 3 of the current Ashes test.

England had already lost the Ashes going into the Melbourne Test but at least Cook’s double century looks to have salvaged something from the current tour.
