Australia has qualified for the 2022 FIFA World Cup against the odds after a tense penalty shootout.

It is will be the fifth consecutive World Cup for the Socceroos, after they defeated Peru 5-4 on penalties after a 0-0 scoreline after 90 minutes and extra time.

Goalkeeper Andrew Redmayne made the final save to win them the spot in Qatar later this  year after he was brought off the bench by coach Graham Arnold just before the end of extra time after a goalless 120 minutes.

Former Socceroos goalkeeper Mark Bosnich told Gareth Parker on 6PR Breakfast the result was a “wonderful achievement” and Australia was the better team on the night.

“They would’ve planned for that scenario [penalty shootouts], but planning for it and doing it are two very different things,” he told Parker.
