Maritime Union won’t support mandatory vaccinations

It will soon be mandatory for some Western Australian port workers to be vaccinated against COVID-19.

Health minister Roger Cook has announced port workers will need to have had at least their first dose of a vaccine by October 15 to access an exposed vessel or interact with crew.

These workers will need to be fully vaccinated by November 12.

MUA WA State Secretary, Will Tracey, told Jane Marwick there has yet to be a ship-to-shore transmission of COVID-19.

“Most of our membership will make the decision to be vaccinated based on the nature of the workplace we are in but we are also a union that doesn’t support mandatory vaccinations, but also recognise that vaccinations are our way out of the pandemic.”
