Residents affected by the out-of-control bushfire south of Margaret River face an anxious wait to see if their properties have been destroyed by the blaze.

The Leeuwin-Naturaliste National Park fire has continued to spread significantly as authorities have warned tourists to stay home.

Milder conditions helped firefighters last night, but an emergency warning remains in place for communities from Redgate Road to the north, Bussell Highway to the east, Chapman Road and Hamelin Bay Road West to the south.

Deputy Incident Controller for the Department of Fire and Emergency Services Craig Garrett said local residents need to remain alert.

“We’re asking property owners that are still in the area to remain vigilant,” he said on 6PR Mornings.

“And to listen to our warnings and our information through Emergency WA.”
