Major change for renters could spell trouble for market with latest proposal

Article image for Major change for renters could spell trouble for market with latest proposal

An overhaul of WA’s Tenancy Laws could be on its way with proposed reforms being considered by the state government.

If passed, landlords would need a valid reason to evict established tenants, such as failing to pay rent.

The remodel suggested by Consumer Protection says that pets would also be allowed in rentals by default.

Real Estate Institute of WA President Damien Collins is concerned the changes could harm the market.

“Ultimately, we want rental and renting to be affordable and accessible, and all this is going to do is put off a lot of private investors,” he said.

“We’ll see less rentals and higher rental prices.”
