No one gave them much of a chance but never ever write off the Socceroos.

6PR Mornings host Liam Bartlett said Australia’s qualification for the 2022 FIFA World Cup, against the odds after a tense penalty shootout against Peru, was “a great day for the round ball game in Australia”.

It is will be the fifth consecutive World Cup for the Socceroos, but they face a tough group at the world’s biggest sporting event.

“Australia will play France (ranked 3rd), Denmark (11th) and Tunisia (35th), Australia is ranked 42nd,” Bartlett said.

Former Socceroos captain Paul Wade told Bartlett there was little pressure on goalkeepers in penalty shoot-outs.

“There’s no pressure on a goalkeeper at all, when you think about the consequences,” Wade said.

“If he lets one in, well it’s because the striker is too good. If he doesn’t, he’s an absolute hero.”

Bartlett also played audio of 6PR sports broadcaster Brad Hardie predicting the Socceroos would qualify on penalties, and questioned whether people would be willing to travel to Qatar for the 2022 tournament, given the country’s human rights record.
