Kings Park trees removed as insidious insect invades

WA’s most cherishes natural park is under dire threat from a fairly unique insect, with Kings Park workers already having to remove two trees because of it.

The Polyphagous shot-hole borer is native to Southeast Asia, but has invaded Australia through imported products.

DPIRD acting biosecurity director Sonya Broughton told Sean Cowan on 6PR Mornings they are committed to keeping the pest quarantined to specific parts of Perth where it’s already been located.

“We’ve got teams going ouyt and looking at trees that are particularly susceptible to being hosts, and we have a whole network of traps around the metropolitan region – over 3,200 at this stage,” Ms Broughton said.
