More than 300 people are expected to become national citizens at one of Perth’s biggest Australia Day events north of the river.

Mayor Albert Jacob told Gareth Parker on 6PR Breakfast the City of Joondalup’s citizenship events were the best part of his job.

“And there are none bigger than the Australian Day one,” he told the program.

“You just see that joy on people’s faces, and they come from everywhere around the world.

“And for generations going forward, their families are all going to grow up together and we’re creating a new community … it’s such a key part of our story.”

Dawn Gleeson, the wife of former Perth Wildcats coach Trevor Gleeson, is one of the hundreds becoming an Australian citizen in Joondalup today.

“So many of those of us pledging today could’ve chosen to live somewhere else, but why would you want to?” she told Parker.
