The family of a Perth man who died after waiting more than two hours for an ambulance have broken their silence after feeling St John Ambulance tried to “sweep the tragedy under the rug”.

The man’s granddaughter Casey told 9 News Perth reporter Jerrie Demasi her 85-year-old grandfather died due to the ambulance delays, despite her grandmother calling 000 on several occasions as his condition deteriorated rapidly.

He is one of three people who died during critical ambulance delays in April and May, blamed on peak demand and COVID staff shortages.

St Johns Ambulance CEO Michelle Fyfe steps down from her role tomorrow, falling on her sword after a string of recent high-profile deaths due to ambulance delays.
