The operators of three mobile food trucks in Hyde Park are facing eviction after the City of Vincent council moved to develop a permanent kiosk in the area.

Under the proposal, the toilet block at the western end of the park will be converted into a kiosk.

After seeking expressions of interest the council has awarded a contract to company Veggie Mama, but the food truck operators say they are being kicked out.

Islam Bouyahia, who runs the What The Flip! Food truck, says he is “outraged” by the council’s decision.

“People do not want a kiosk in a toilet block in Hyde Park,” He said on 6PR Breakfast.

“So as they encouraged us, through the mobile food vendor program, to create a community and create goodwill, and to activate the area, now we are just being asked to go.

“For some of us it’s just not possible, I’m not a retired man with a mortgage paid off, so I can’t just move on just like this, we need some time, we need some negotiation.”

However, City of Vincent Mayor Emma Cole says food trucks operating in the area were never meant to be permanent.

“Food trucks are fundamentally different to a permanent kiosk,” she said.

“They operate on an annual permit, and (Mr Bouyahia) is paying $700 a  year to have his food truck at Hyde Park.

“The policy that we have was never intended for food trucks to be permanent fixtures in the park.”
